Moving sales from marketplaces to your own store - when it is worth it

A lot of companies start selling on Allegro, OLX or similar marketplaces. The traffic is already there. Over time the fees, the rules and the fact that the customer belongs to the platform become a limit. This article covers the trade-offs and when it is worth opening your own store.

Pros and cons of selling on marketplaces

Reach is the main advantage. People already search there, so you do not have to build traffic from zero. The panel is familiar, and support exists when something breaks. Listing a product is faster than launching a shop.

The other side: every order pays a fee. You do not own the customer relationship. Rules and ranking can change without notice. Your brand sits next to a dozen similar offers. Building a list or a repeat-purchase habit is harder when the checkout is not yours.

Pros and cons of your own online store

You control the catalogue, the checkout, the emails and the data. Margins are not eaten by a listing fee on every sale. You can run a newsletter, a loyalty rule, a brand that does not look like a search result. Integrations with accounting and couriers sit in one admin.

The cost is real: the site, hosting, payments, ads, care. Traffic does not appear because the shop exists. You need a reason for people to type your URL or click your ad. For a first test of a product, that can be too much.

When it is worth moving

A few signals: marketplace fees start to hurt, you have repeat buyers you cannot write to, you need a checkout or a product page the platform will not allow, or you want a brand that stands on its own. You do not have to leave the marketplace overnight. Many shops keep both - the platform for reach, the own store for the customers they already know.
